The storyteller “Valpuri” is a Finnish nurse for the mentally ill. He treats people whose extreme life experiences and illnesses have lead to severe problems or violence, and have therefore been admitted to the locked-up institution. Each episode describes a patient with Valpuri’s text and comics artist Viivi Rintanen’s illustrations. This one describes suspicious Sanna, who knows the staff is way more dangerous than she is. The purpose of T he Hardcore Psychiatry Series is to represent the madness most stigmatized and hidden in an curious, even empathetic manner. It was produced as a part of the Comic about Madness -webcomic via it’s creator’s s toryteller method. In this simple, inclusive method, readers send Rintanen stories of their real-life experiences of madness or mental illness. Rintanen scripts the stories with the storytellers and draws them into webcomics according to their wishes. The final comics are published in her Comics about Madness -blog (with English subtitles). This time Rintanen preserved the storyteller’s voice as a narrator and only illustrated the first four episodes into a bedtime story for adults.
Rintanen, her storytellers and the webcomic have a common goal: the blog’s aim is to reduce the stigma of madness, which is a severe social issue even in Finland. These webcomics work also as approachable peer support material and an educational aid for people working in the medical field. If you have an important international story to tell, feel free to send an confidential email to Viivi at email@example.com.
