“One day in Kara Tepe” tells the story of a young Syrian refugee and her resolve to find a better life in Europe. The comic was based on interviews and observations in the refugee camp Kara Tepe on the Greek island Lesbos (October 2017). Refugees continue to arrive there daily on dangerous, illegal crossings from Turkey, only to find themselves stuck between an urgent shortage of facilities and endless bureaucracy.
This story is part of a collection of three journalistic comics made on the island, the other two by Aimée de Jongh, who initiated the project, and Judith Vanistendael. The comics appeared in NRC (www.nrc.nl/lesbos) and de Standaard.
