‘In every pencil lives a good spirit’, says Axel Claes. ‘And the same goes for pieces of charcoal, markers and fountain pens. You can draw lines with them, or fill large surfaces. With these tools you can spread opinions. And hat is how I got close to graphic journalism. A profession where writing is drawing, and where you can write stories by drawing them. It involves a lot of research too. I have notebooks full with visuals, and sketchbooks filled with all sorts of text. Sooner or later, it all comes together.’ Axel is also a riso printer at Chez Rosi in Brussels where he is in contact with artists, activists and academics from all kind of disciplines, almost on a dayly basis. ‘That keeps the mind sharp,’ he says, ‘the exchange with others puts my own work into a broader perspective.’ Axel Claes developed Wind Over Water during the course graphic journalism that Eva Hilhorst taught. ‘In elk potlood woont een goede geest’, zegt Axel Claes. ‘En dat geldt natuurlijk ook voor stukjes houtskool, stiften en vulpennen. Je kan er lijntjes mee tekenen, of hele oppervlakten mee vullen. Je kan er meningen mee verspreiden. En zo kom je bij grafische journalistiek terecht. Een vak waar schrijven tekenen is, en je al tekenend verhalen mee kan schrijven . Er komt ook opzoekingswerk bij te pas. Zo heeft Axel notaboekjes vol aantekeningen, en schetsboekjes vol notities. Vroeg of laat komt het allemaal bij elkaar’. Riso-drukken doet Axel ook, zo staat hij, Chez riso in Brussel, dagelijks in contact met kunstenaars, activisten en academici uit allerlei disciplines.‘Dat houdt de geest scherp’, zegt hij, ‘en relativeert wat ik met mijn eigen werk doe. Door uitwisseling met anderen krijgt het perspectief.’

Wind over water ontwikkelde hij tijdens een cursus grafische journalistiek met Eva Hilhorst, met wie hij nu aan een serie workshops rond het Brusselse zuidstation werkt.
